I was motivated to write this article after reading Vu Le's piece, "Amidst Cruelty and Chaos, A World That's On Her Way,"on Nonprofit AF. His words resonated deeply with me, prompting reflection on the critical role nonprofits play in times of upheaval.
In times when fear, chaos, and the abuse of power attempt to dominate our society, nonprofits stand as a beacon of hope, resilience, and moral leadership. As uncertainty challenges the foundations of trust and community, the role of nonprofits becomes even more critical—providing safety, embodying courageous leadership, and showcasing the power of collective action.
Thanks, to Vu Le’s piece, I was introduced to Arundhati Roy's beautiful words, “Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.” Nonprofits are the midwives of that world, tirelessly working to bring her closer to fruition. They remind us that amidst the noise of fear and chaos, there is a quieter but powerful force of hope and change steadily growing.
The Safety of Nonprofits: Protecting What Matters
Nonprofits have always been champions of safety, whether that means providing shelter for those without homes, advocating for marginalized voices, or ensuring access to the arts remain accessible in our communities. In turbulent times, this role expands tenfold. When fear seeks to divide and chaos disrupts stability, nonprofits serve as safe havens—physically, emotionally, and culturally. They are places where people can find refuge, reassurance, and community.
Yet, the safety of nonprofits themselves is not guaranteed. Many face challenges such as reduced funding, increased scrutiny, and heightened political tension. Protecting the operational and financial security of these organizations is paramount, as their ability to serve is directly tied to their own sustainability. This requires intentional investment in infrastructure, programs, and leadership development to ensure they remain resilient.
The Leadership of Nonprofits: Rising Above
In moments of societal unrest, nonprofit leaders often rise to the occasion, stepping into roles that demand not just management skills but moral clarity and unwavering commitment. Nonprofit leadership is unique—it blends empathy with strategy, and vision with grassroots action. These leaders aren’t just keeping the lights on; they’re inspiring communities, fostering partnerships, and driving systemic change.
Strong nonprofit leadership also requires adaptability. As crises evolve, so must the strategies employed to address them. This means embracing innovation, collaborating across sectors, and cultivating a mindset of continuous learning. The best leaders know that their role is not just to guide their organization but to empower their teams, boards, and communities to share in the responsibility of creating change.

The Courage of Nonprofits: Leading with Heart
Perhaps most inspiring is the courage that nonprofits embody. It takes immense bravery to confront fear and chaos head-on, to advocate for justice in the face of adversity, and to work tirelessly toward a better future even when the odds seem insurmountable. Nonprofits operate at the intersection of passion and purpose, often putting themselves in challenging and vulnerable positions to advance their missions.
Courage in the nonprofit sector isn’t just about bold actions; it’s about persistence. It’s about continuing to serve when resources are scarce, speaking truth to power when it’s uncomfortable, and standing in solidarity with communities when it’s most needed. This courage is contagious, inspiring others to join the fight for equity, justice, and compassion.
A Call to Action
In times like these, we cannot afford to take nonprofits for granted. Their safety, leadership, and courage are essential to the fabric of our society. As individuals, businesses, and fellow organizations, we must commit to supporting them in every way possible—through financial contributions, volunteering, advocacy, and partnership.
Let us champion the nonprofits that champion us all. Let us recognize their value, bolster their efforts, and stand alongside them as they work to create a world where fear, chaos, and power do not have the final say.
Together, we can ensure that hope, resilience, and community prevail so that "new world" Arundhati Roy speaks of becomes louder and ushered in sooner.
I admire and appreciate you for the hard work you are doing to make a better, safer world for all.
